PROGRAM FEATURES

AN UNUSUAL OPPORTUNITY

  • To learn about environmental problems and potential solutions in the context of a former communist country making the transition to a free market
  • To take courses in English in a non-English speaking country, while still gaining significant exposure to the culture and learning enough basic conversational Polish to survive
  • To travel throughout the region as part of the course "Environmental Science and Policy in Central and Eastern Europe" which includes field trips throughout Poland and a one-week environmental tour of the Czech Republic.

 

TIME & LOCATION

  • Spring semester only, based in Krakow, the medieval capital of Poland, begins early February and ends mid-June
  • Includes orientation program and intensive Polish language instruction (survival Polish) and lectures on Polish culture and history
  • Close proximity to Prague, Vienna, and Budapest and the Tatra range of the Carpathian Mountains

 

AFFILIATED INSTITUTIONS

  • The Jagiellonian University (founded 1364) for language, culture, and elective courses in many disciplines which can be arranged upon request.
  • The Technical University of Krakow (Politechnika Krakowska) for environmental science and engineering electives related to water supply, water pollution, and toxic pollution measurement
  • The Krakow Academy of Mining and Metallurgy for environmental economics, and earth sciences (geology)
  • Masaryk University located in Brno, Czech Republic

 

OTHER FEATURES

  • The environmental program is coordinated closely with the Poland Program of Swarthmore's Theatre and Dance departments, including an orientation program and dormitory housing. A theatre or dance course may be taken by students in the Environmental Program.
  • All program costs, living expenses, and basic travel costs, including airfare to Poland, are covered for enrolled Swarthmore College students.  Financially aided students receive their normal aid package.
