Drexel University Internships/Graduate Opportunities
- Documenting the Effects of Urban Sprawl on a Model Watershed
Near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Interdiscipliary evaluation of
surface/subsurface contaminant pathways and effects on stream
biota, coupled with evaluation of the political forces that have
influenced the land use history of the watershed. NSF/EPA/USDA
Water And Watersheds; PI: C. Welty; Co-PIs: S. Kilham, A. Packman,
R. Brulle. (New March 1, 2000). 4 PhD students needed with
interest in one of the following areas: ecology, surface water
hydrology, groundwater hydrology, environmental policy. The
hydrology students should have a quantitative background.
- Modelling Virus Transport in Aquifers. Ongoing effort to
evaluate the interaction between aquifer heterogeneity and
colloid/virus transport. NSF, Hydrologic Science. PI: C. Welty;
co-PI: R.W. Harvey (USGS). A PhD student or post-doc with
numerical modeling background (i.e., knowing how to code) is
needed.
- Evaluation of Density-Coupled Transport in Heterogeneous
Aquifers. Ongoing effort - physical experiments and numerical
modeling. NSF, Hydrologic Science and International Activities.
PI: C. Welty. co-PI: T. Illangasekare. One MS-level student
needed, primarily to work on physical experiments.
- Disinfection processes for drinking water. Evaluation of
inactivation kinetics for protozoans and bacterial pathogens using
chemical disinfection processes. Students interested in working on
mathematical analysis and modelling of disinfection systems are
particularly needed. AWWARF. PI: C.N. Haas.
- Microbiological risk assessment. Development of models for
the transmission of illness via hand-to-mouth transfer of
microorganisms. This effort may also extend into population level
modeling. Funding from a number of consumer products companies.
