ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERS OR ENVIRONMENTAL SPECIALISTS

ENTRY LEVEL TO FULL PERFORMANCE ($25,000 to $50,000)

TOTAL MAXIMUM DAILY LOAD PROGRAM - Duties involve the application of computer models to determine the TMDL of pollutants that can be discharged to the various District of Columbia Water bodies and still meet the water quality standards. Current plans are for a quasi 3-D WASP model of the Anacostia with sediment transport capability for toxics. Rock Creek will use HSPF with a GIS. For the Potomac, it is likely that the current state of the art Chesapeake Bay Model will be applied in a partnership with Maryland Department of the Environment and the Corp of Engineers. Model development will be performed by contract. The duties will require extensive coordination with the contractor and adjacent political jurisdictions upstream and downstream. Research and data acquisition projects must be closely coordinated to ensure timely arrival of data need for coefficients and input files. Some amount of field work may be necessary to develop the data or assist researchers and contractors. Final calibration and fine tuning may be performed in-house and all scenarios will be run and analyzed in-house. The job requires the preparation of the final TMDL document and the coordination with the public and EPA. Interaction with computer modeling staff from the Chesapeake Bay Program, the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin and Maryland Department of the Environment will be necessary to remain current with the latest advancements in the field.

SOURCE WATER ASSESSMENT - Duties involve being responsible for project coordination and management of the Source Water Assessment of the District of Columbia's drinking water treatment plant. This assessment is mandated by the U.S. Safe Drinking Water Act and involves EPA, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and the Interstate Commission on The Potomac River Basin. The assessment will determine the pollutants that currently or in the future affect the water quality of the untreated drinking water.

WATER QUALITY STANDARDS - Duties involve being responsible for the review and revision of the District of Columbia water quality standards. The standards establish the physical and chemical conditions necessary to support a balanced aquatic ecosystem. EPA regulations, guidelines and criteria documents are used to prepare the standards. Position requires the coordination with EPA, the Chesapeake Bay Program and surrounding states and jurisdictions.

GROUNDWATER - Duties involve being responsible for review of groundwater quality issues at contaminated military sites. Will work as part of a District of Columbia project review team interacting with U.S. EPA and military officials and contractors at the sites. Must be knowledgeable about groundwater and geology.
