Subject: Asian Environmental History Association

The Asian Environmental History group will be meeting at the AAS in Washington, DC, on Saturday, March 28, from 1PM to 2:30, in Georgetown Room East. The goal of this group is to encourage communication between scholars working on the subject in different countries of Asia, past and present. From my perspective as a historian of China, there are two items for the agenda:

  1. A discussion of the recently published volume, Sediments of Time, edited by Mark Elvin and Liu Ts'ui-jung, the first major publication covering the vast range of Chinese environmental history. I will give a short introduction and comments on the volume, and I would welcome your reactions.
  2. A discussion of how to continue the Chinese Environmental Newsletter, founded and edited by Helen Dunstan, who is unfortunately unable to do it any more. What are the prospects for continuing this valuable publication?

I would welcome suggestions and proposals on any other topics that the group may be interested in . I look forward to seeing you at the AAS.
