Advocate of Peace and Related Titles

Periodical publications of the American Peace Society and its predecessors

The Advocate of Peace (with many variations on this title) was the primary periodical published by the
American Peace Society and its predecessors. Known publication dates range from 1823 to the present.

The first years of issue of the Advocate of Peace (1823-1824) were published in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by the Pennsylvania Peace Society. There seems have been a hiatus in publication from 1825 through 1827. The Advocate of Peace and Christian Patriot was published in Philadelphia by W. Stavely for the Pennsylvania Peace Society during 1828-1829. From 1828 to 1831 The Harbinger of Peace was published in New York, New York under the auspices of the American Peace Society. In May, 1831, the name of the periodical was changed to The Calumet. This remained the name until 1834 or 1835. The Calumet was then absorbed into The American Advocate of Peace (which seems to have restarted shortly before), and publication was moved to Hartford, Connecticut, to be overseen by the Connecticut Peace Society. It remained there from June 1834 [or 1835] through December 1836. With the June, 1837 issue, publication was moved to Boston, Massachusetts, to be overseen again by the American Peace Society. The title was changed to Advocate of Peace. It continued for eight years until yet another name and publication location change occurred in January1846, when it moved to Worcester, Massachusetts and was published as The Advocate of Peace and Universal Brotherhood. The periodical remained in Worcester for just one year, then moved back to Boston with the January/February 1847 issue under the title of Advocate of Peace, remaining there until 1883 [?]. Within some issues, The Angel of Peace (written for young adults) can also be found. Angel of Peace apparently was published from 1872 to 1902 in Boston. In 1884 [?], Advocate of Peace became The American Advocate of Peace and Arbitration. Issues were published in Boston under this name until 1892. The name was then changed back to The American Advocate of Peace from June 1892 through December 1893. The title became The Advocate of Peace once again in January, 1894. During this time publication remained in Boston. The name was changed again in March, 1920 to The Advocate of Peace through Justice, when the American Peace Society moved to Washington, D.C. Publication of The Advocate of Peace through Justice ceased in March, 1932, when it was superseded by World Affairs. Publication under this title by the American Peace Society in Washington D.C. continues to the present day.
